- Despite the fact that this is the wrong heading, I know ewright will
- read it...
- Post your best (even theoretical) numbers of
- a) MIPS
- b) MFlops
- c) pixels/second
- d) kB/second disk speed.
-
- You have $6000 to spend on a system and an OS (yes, we will pretend
- Windows is an OS. OS/2, System 7 and Unix/X-windows all qualify. DOS
- could be counted, I guess).
- My offering, A customized, compatible: Texgraphics CIS-486/50E
-
- 50 MHz 486 with AMI BIOS, 256K 15 nS cache over internal 8k cache
- 8 MB 60 nS RAM (upgradeable to 64MB on board)
- Orchid Prodesigner IISE EISA (32-bit bus) 16-bit graphics card
- capable of 1280x1024 resolution
- AMI Fast Disk II caching SCSI controller (386sx-16 as a controller)
- with 4MB disk cache - (This is like using a Mac Classic II as a
- dedicated disk cache system for a Quadra!)
- Cabletron Ethernet card (added to make up for Quadra's Ethernet expense)
- Microsoft two-button bus mouse
- NEC 14" 3FGx Monitor
- Microscience 14 mS access, 676MB SCSI-II drive with 500K hr. MTBF and
- 64K look-ahead track buffer.
- 2 serial ports, 1 parallel port.
- Math coprocessor (built in to 486)
-
- three available 32 bit slots for expansion.
- Loaded with operating system (choose anything but System n (Mac) for
- this puppy! OK- Unix would be BSD 386 freeware...
-
- I'll dig up the numbers i posted on this to C.S.I.P.H, but I tell you this,
- the AMI card is rated at 18MB/sec on appropriate peripherals by AMI! The bus
- peaks at 33 MB/sec in burst mode and the video is not surpassed by anything
- short of a TMS34020/50 coprocessed video (that I know of)...
- While I find my numbers, go borrow a friends stripped Quadra for $6000 and
- get your numbers, Mr Wright. IE- put up or shut up!
-
- Jeff Andle ! I Like Macs, as far as word processors go, It's Mac users
- U. Maine ! that I find objectionable...
