- Well, I'm going to say something that I might get flamed for, but what
- the hell...
-
- Avoid purchasing the cheapest floppies you can unless you can afford to
- a) pay the postage on the ones that format out with bad sectors or other
- defects (to take advantage of the "lifetime warranty") or
- (WORSE) b) LOSE DATA.
-
- I've used a variety of diskettes from a variety of sources and the media
- produced by 3M, Sony, BASF, and Verbatim have yet to format with bad
- sectors for me. In contrast the DSDD 3.5" diskettes I bought from
- MEI in 1990 (my last experience with the company) had about 1 disk in
- 10 refuse to format correctly (no bad sectors) or "go bad" after a month
- of use. That 1 in 10 figure is unscientific, but I had a stack of about 6
- bad diskettes out of a 50 diskette order.
-
- It has been my experience that you get what you pay for when it comes to
- floppy diskettes. I figure that if the seller is not able (or contractually
- bound not to) to give out the name of the manufacturer of the diskette,
- it's probably not worth it.
-
- Personally, I usually pay about $10 - $11 per box of *good* 3.5" HD
- diskettes (3M, BASF). That price is at Best Buy, an electronics
- discount chain. For my time and trouble, $1 per disk isn't all that
- much.
