- Hello again,
-
- About a week ago I posted the following message:
-
- ---------------------------------------
-
- Hello folks,
-
- Presently i am using a borrowed faxmodem and software from 'Lightspeed' on
- my mac. The problem is it is very unreliable ( 1 out of 4 transmitions or
- receptions fail ), its ugly in its handling ( its a straight PC port ) and
- it won't work with Sys7.
-
- Its positive points are: it can send and receive faxes and you can configure
- the mac to which the modem is connected as a fax server on an apple talk net-
- work. And it operates in the background.
-
- So what i am looking for is a 9600 fax-modem with send and receive capabilities
- Further i need a decent MAC program to operate the fax-modem, i also want to
- be able to configure it as a network server and i want to be able to use it
- with other programs, that is i want a printerdriver for the fax-modem so i
- can print to it.
-
- So my questions are:
-
- -Do you always need a specific combination of fax-modem of brand X and
- fax-program of the same brand X, or is there some standard?
-
- -Do you know a reliable fax-modem with send and receive capabilities?
-
- -Do you know a decent MAC program to operate it as above explained?
-
-
- Please mail or post your answers, i will summarize if requested.
-
- Thank you

- I'm using a Prometheus Ultima Home Office, a 14.4k modem with
- voice-mail and 9600 send/recieve (type II and III-don't quote me)
- fax. It also operates as its own line switcher (as long as its little app
- is running, otherwise it just assumes fax only. Can be had for under
- $500 now...I think it can run in the background, but I haven't ever
- used the option so I can't be sure. When taking a call it _does_ take
- over the mac for a second (which can really screw-up a game ;)) The software
- it comes with is decent and to my knowledge I've never had a fax send/receive
- error. A 2400 baud modem with 9600 fax send/receive can be had from
- Prometheus for less if that'll do ya.
-
- Facts stated above and facts in the real world may vary. Most should be
- simmilar.

-
- I've heard good things about the Supra Fax Modem (at 9600 or 14400 speeds)
- and about the software 'FAXstf'. Based on the recommendations I've received
- from other folks here at the University of Minnesota, I might well be buying
- one within the next week.
-
- I'm curious what other people have had to say about modems. Would you please
- bounce an e-mail summary to me?
-
- Thanks
-

- I believe that most Mac FAX modem software provide a Chooser printer driver.
- I use the Prometheus Home Office Ultima: V.32b, V.42, V.42b, 9600 send/receive
- FAX. It comes with an Extension, which can be set to auto send/receive FAXs.
- Also a Chooser printer driver, and you can also set it so that there is a
- "Fax" addition in the menu bar. This allows you to print to FAX without
- going to the Chooser to change printers, then change printers back. Very
- reliable in my experience.
-
- The Extension is also smart enough to yield control of the serial port when
- another program opens it. Thus, I can have the Extension in auto-answer mode
- and still dial up my school mainframe without disabling FAX receive. When I
- quit my terminal program, the Extension grabs back the serial port and watches
- for incoming FAXs again.
-
- The Home Ultima also does voice mail. You need to be running its application
- (in the background, if you want) and it is not totally non-intrusive as is the
- FAX features. The FAX application, MaxFAX, is easy to use and flexible, allowing
- logging of calls, sorting of FAXs/voice, creation of FAX lists and cover
- sheets, etc..
-
- No network abilities, though. (At least not directly... I don't know what
- would happen if you used System 7's file sharing ability to stick files in
- its queue...)

-
- Well, I recently bought a Zoom 14,400 Fax/Modem, which came with software
- called QuickLink II Fax by Smith Micro Software. The software has a FAX Print
- chooser device, works in the background, and might even be able to work from a
- server, although I can't verify that. The software does have two problems,
- though:
-
- 1. The cover pages look ugly, and
-
- 2. There's a big bug in the FAX Print chooser device that causes many graphics
- packages, such as Photoshop, Canvas, and the BBEdit text editor, to bomb with a
- bus error. I contacted Smith Micro and they said they will be working on a
- solution for this problem ASAP.
-
- Best of all, the modem only cost me US $325, which isn't bad for 14,400 data
- and FAX send/receive, with v.42, v.32, and v.32bis, plus MNP level 5 error
- correction.
-
- Hope this helps!
