- The PowerBook 145 is probably on sale because Apple is replacing
- most of their models with much better ones in the near future. If I were
- you I would wait for the PowerBook 160 which will feature a 640 x 480 4
- bit backlit supertwist screen (16 greys). Like the 145 it won't have an
- FPU, but the 33MHz PowerBook 180 will along with and active matrix screen.
- Both of these models will have video out ports that support 8 bit color on
- a 13" monitor (256 colors). Also, both units will support memory up to
- 14MB.
- Additionally Apple is introducing the PowerBook Duo 210 and 230
- which will be 4 pound dockable units with the same screen as the 160 will
- have. The 210 will be powered by a 25MHz 68030 wo/FPU while the 230 will
- have a 33MHz processor and FPU. A 4/80 duo is expected to cost less than
- $3K and a 120MB hard drive will be an option. The 160 and 180 will be
- priced from $2600 to $3500. The 170 will be discontinued when the new
- ones come out and the 145 will become the low end PowerBook.
- As for current options, a Radius PowerView (c. $500-600) will give
- you external monitor support, but is a heavy tax on the processor and RAM
- because of the way it deals with QuickDraw GrafPorts through the SCSI
- interface (it doesn't compute bitmaps for the screen itself). Supermac is
- coming out with a faster SCSI adapter (which computes QuickDraw
- primitives) but will be priced higher. For internal options, Evisio makes
- the Display Adapter 030 for the 140, 170, and 145 but I have heard lots a
- bad things about short curcuits with the adapter (supposedly fixed by a
- mylar sheet, there is a review of it in Sept MacWorld). Also there is a
- display adapter made by Computer Care called the BookView Imperial (i
- think) which does what the envisio does. Both internal options allow for
- extra memory and support 256 colors on a 13" monitor. If you want more
- information look at the 8.10.92 issue of MacWEEK for details on the new
- PowerBook models.
