- This may be a FAQ, but I'm not sure. If so, then add my comments!
-
- My girlfriend has an Outbound 2030E, which I have used a fair bit. I
- have a Mac+, but will be moving up to a IIci-class machine soon.
- Anyway, I like several things about the outbound - the expandability is
- very nice. You can upgrade hard drives, memory, even the CPU, all relatively
- easily; pop it open, slide out the right item and replace it. If you're
- considering starting with a low-power machine and moving up later, this is the
- best way, IMHO.
- The price is generally better than the Powerbook, at least with the
- piss-poor offers the UH bookstore makes.
- The Outbound battery is a regular camcorder battery, about 1/2 the
- price of the Apple battery.
- BUT:
-
- The outbound screen is very succeptible to ghosting; I find that
- working on that machine drives me crazy after about 20 minutes. The PB170's
- active matrix screen is *so* much better it's worth the price difference. My
- thesis advisor has a PB170 that he had me set up for him (total compuphobe),
- and I have to say I prefer it to the Outbound. The screen and keypad make the
- difference; the PB's have a wrist-rest below the keys, and the tracball under
- the b/n keys. The Outbound has "standard laptop config. keyboard" which means
- the bottom row of keys are at the forward edge of the machine - this twists
- my wrist painfully after about half an hour. Also, the outbound has a "roller
- bar," which I find difficult to use. Debbie, on the other hand, said she
- had no problems after about 2 days of use. Go figure.
-
- So in brief, I prefer the PB 170 over the similar-CPU Outbound, though
- I haven't used a 140/5 or 100 at all. I'm still not entirely happy with the
- PowerBook; hope the new releases in October help that situation.
-
- Hope this helps.
-
- Clear Skies,
- Kimo
