- A couple of weeks ago, I posted a tale of woe. My replacement hard disk
- apparently arrived 1 boot too late for the old disk. I was looking for ways
- to get the old disk to boot one last time so I could move the data on it to
- its replacement. Several folks sent replies with suggestions on how to
- get the old disk to spin up one last time. (THANKS to all who replied!!)
-
- Alas, none of the suggestions worked on my deceased disk. At this point, it
- is at a disk repair shop trying to be resurrected (thanks AT&T!!). I thought
- I'd post the suggestions given to me in the hopes that others may benefit from
- the advice I was given. I will try to give everyone credit who sent me e-mail
- (some folks posted to the net as well). If I miss your name, I apologize. I
- am gratefull to all!
-
- Note, several people suggested a number of approaches. The categories below
- are probably too general, but they seemed to cover the basic approaches.

- Removing the mechanism from the Mac will let you apply a bit of a twist:
- hold it in both hands and give it a twist as if you were
- trying to turn a steering wheel back and forth rapidly to
- avoid running over something on the highway.
-
- If that doesn't work, try running it over on the highway!
-

- Category 2: Beat it!

- When I had a stiction-plagued Quantum in my MacII, I kept it
- going for a month by increasingly hard whacks on the side of the
- Mac after hitting the power-on key. I suppose a direct tap on the
- drive might be a bit kinder to the rest of the machine, but I hit
- the whole box pretty hard with no collateral damage except to the
- heel of the hand near the end. Good luck.

- Hey Larry, I used to work for GE Med Sys!
-
-
- Another approach is to get at the end of the spindle/axle. On some
- drives, one end of the spindle that the platters rotate on is exposed.
- I've had some success pressing a pencil eraser tightly against the
- spindle end and rotating it. The catch is that on most drives I've seen,
- only one end of the spindle is exposed, and it's usually on the end
- that has the drive's pc board mounted over it. If you're really
- desparate and #1 doesn't work, then this is worth a last ditch
- effort. (Just undo a few screws and lift the pc board.)
-
-
- I guess that about sums things up. If you have further questions or comments
- I can be reached at mps@cbvox.att.com. Replying to this posting will not
- get a message back to me. (security & all).
