  35.   Bob, what is probably happening is the dreaded 'memory effect' common to
  36. NiCad batteries.  If the battery is not fully (or at least close to it)
  37. discharged before it is recharged then a "memory barrier" is created at the
  38. point where the battery started to recharge.  Thus the amount of charge
  39. that a battery can take is reduced, and the batterie does not last as long.
  40.  The best thing to do with these type of batteries in order to get the
  41. maximum life out of them is to run 'em right down to where the "10 minutes
  42. of power..." dialog comes on, then put 'em the recharger and let them
  43. charge all of the way.
  44.   Unfortunately once the barrire is there I don't think that there is
  45. anything that you can do to get rid of it.  Also the projected life span
  46. for the Apple batteries is only about a year anyway, so yours could just be
  47. getting a little little long in the tooth.

  49.   What I did for my 170 was to buy the Battery Charger/Conditioner from
  50. Lind Electronic Designs out of Minneapolis.  This charger will fully
  51. discharge the battery and then fully charge it.   With this I've been able
  52. to get 2 - 2.5 hours of useful time on a PB 170 with 2Mb of RAM and 10MB of
  53. virtual memory running MS Word 4.0.
