- yes, but would she be unable to get along without them? I take advantage of a
- lot of features of my new Civic si, but if I had to (for whatever reason), I
- could make do perfectly well with the Civic cx.
-
- Wanting is not needing. I suspect that if your wife were to sit herself down
- at a System 6 machine, she'd do just fine. There's nothing wrong with System
- 6. All the hoopla about System 7 sounds like so much Newspeak (prior to May
- 1990: "System 6.0.7 is the absolute pinnacle of Mac System software. Anyone
- using 6.0.5 is a dweeb. 6.0.7 is so great..." Post-May 1990: "Anyone using
- 6.0.7 is a dweeb. System 6 is so useless. System 7 is the only way to go.
- It runs on everything from the Mac Plus on up...." Yeah, it runs on machines
- that were perfectly happy running System 5...).
-
- Having the latest just for the sake of having the latest is not, IMHO,
- necessarily a good way to live one's life. (Many people _need_ the latest,
- for whatever reason, but that's OK.) There are many people who don't need
- System 7 features, are getting along just fine without them. A Mac Plus
- running System 5 and Word 3.02 was more than adequate back then; is it any
- less adequate for doing the same work today, just because System 7 and Word 5
- 0a are out now? Nope.
