- I found this qt movie at ftp.apple.com in /pub/pugh/quicktime.
- I downloaded it as macbinary and converted it with mcvert to binhex (1.6
- megs binhexed, 1.2 mb file). Since qt doesn't compress to well and I'm at
- 2400 baud for the next three weeks, I didn't compress it (savings on unix
- compress was under 1%). If it's a problem, you may want to convert it.
- This is the now famous Simpsons scene responding to Bush's
- snub. It shows Bush's "more like the Walton's and less like the
- Simpsons" line and Bart's "waiting for the depression to end" retort.
- Enjoy!

- Look in the back of MacUser, MacWeek, MacWorld, etc. for their ad. Their
- phone number is 800-426-6375. They can ocasionally be a bit of a pain to
- deal with, but they have always treated me fairly.
-
- I have bought a couple of hundred simms from them. I have never been able to
- beat their price on a regular basis. They do have a lifetime warranty

- that I have purchased are either apple or Chip Merchant.

-
- I purchased some 4MB SIMMS from the Chip Merchant two months ago. I
- needed them for a big project I was working on. When they arrived, I
- installed them and started up my Mac. The Mac gave a funny chime sound
- (RAM problem), rebooted and started up just fine. It worked for about an
- hour and then my Mac crashed. After that the Mac always booted up to a
- chime sound.
-
- I checked to make sure the SIMMS were all installed correctly and making
- good contact, and of course used a ground strap when installing them, but
- the chips refused to work. I called the Chip Merchant and explained my
- problem and they told me I had done everything right, and that the SIMMS
- were bad. They didn't sound like this was uncommon for them. I then
- talked to a lady to arrange for replacement SIMMS who was very rude, so I
- cancelled my order and bought them elsewhere, this time with no problems.
-
- I hope you have better luck with the Chip Merchant.

-
- John,
-
- For what it's worth, I bought a 128K Mac in 1984. It was converted to a Mac+
- in 1986 by a dealer in Denver. From 1986 to 1988 I lived in Brussels and ran
- it off a transformer, so it ran for 2 years at 50Hz instead of 60. I
- upgraded the memory to 4MB in 1990, and installed a Brainstorm Accelerator in
- 1992.
-
- Other than the upgrade in '86, the only time it has seen a service shop was
- in '89, when the power supply died, which I understand is a not particularly
- rare occurrence. The only maintenance that I normally perform on it is
- cleaning accumulated gunk off of the roller wheels in the mouse when the
- cursor motion gets jerky, and cleaning the screen when it gets dirty. If you
- live in a particularly dusty environment you might need to do more, but it
- seems to me that "an annual tune-up" is nothing more than a simple way for a
- dealer to extract money from your wallet for nothing.
-
- Of course, I could come home today to find that due to a lack of annual tune-
- ups, my trusty Mac has fallen to pieces while I sit here at work typing this,
- but if I do, I'll be sure to let you know.
-
- Good luck,
-

-
- If you want email and news and the ability to retrieve files remotely, while
- using an excellent Mac interface, consider uAccess. It's a top-notch email

- news program for the individual user. You do all reading and writing locally
- on your Mac, and uAccess dials your server to exchange mail and news, so you

-
- Cons? Being a commercial product, uAccess cannot compete with shareware on

- As of yet, I'm unconvinced at the usefulness of MacEKG.
-
- We've used it to diagnose one machine - it failed. To be fair, Apple's
- TechStep never came up with a consistent answer either. That's shows you
- just how screwed up the logic board of that machine was.
-
- Since then, we haven't had a machine go bad to test. But, my initial
- impression is that MacEKG is more concerned with impressing you with flashy
- graphics rather than running an extensive suite of diagnostics.

- If anyone has experienced wonderful results with MacEKG I'd love to hear

-
- I have routinely used MacTools and Norton to repair blown disks for
- several years now and it has taught me one thing- that neither program is
- perfect. This includes the most recent incarnations of these two programs
- (v2.0). I have seen Norton & MacTools run through a disk happily repairing
- things that they think are wrong. However, upon reboot, I have found that
- disks
- have been completely trashed. This has happened with both products. I have
- also
- found that both products are very successful at recovering blown disks- often
- where the other has failed. For that reason, I use both.
-
- My personal preference is MacTools, but that is only because it
- includes the backup program that I also use routinely, one that isn't supplied
- by Norton. I do not use the anti-virus program provided with MacTools-
- Disinfectant is far superior in my mind. If you have to routinely recover bad
- disks, I recommend both programs. They both work and complement each other
- very
- well. This whole discussion about which is better reminds me of the PC Wars
- that wage over whether an Apple ][ is better than a PC or if a Mac is better
- than both of them (which of course it is, or else you wouldn't be reading

- Seriously folks, I appreciate the supreme frustration of hardware/software
- failure or user futz-up that results in lost files. Over the years I have
- given support to dozens of users and Norton Utilities for the Mac has
- earned its place on my 'must-have' list of software many times over.
-
- The only problems I ever had with it was with the old version of SpeedDisk.
- I had crashes in the middle of an Optimization that resulted in a few files
- with unrecoverable scrambled B-tree catalogues.
-
- Missing from the flames directed at Norton was any comments about tech
- support. My experience has been that any of the few problems I've had and
- some charmingly naive questions I've had were professionally dispatched by
- Symantec/Norton p.d.q..
-
- Finally (I hope), the bundling of Symantec's Utilities for the Macintosh with
- Norton's Utilities for the Macintosh represents a significant increase in the
- value of the package and a savings overall.
-
- I can't compare it with the latest version of MacTools but I agree with the
- comment that utilities such as N.U.M. are more alike than different.
-
- For those experiencing problems with FileSaver; 1.) Check to see that it is
- turned on, and 2.) there is a known conflict with AutoDoubler versions prior

- I think the limitation is important because the tech support people
- have to be sure that they won't be deluged with email from users needing

-
- Well, TidBITS is on a LISTSERV and the 2800 people there have some
- pretty weird addresses that go through most of the time with no trouble.
- Errors are generally local to the subscriber's site. I don't think
- that's a major problem any more with a well-run LISTSERV.

-
- To those negatives, both of which are valid, I'd like to add the fact
- that users can just Reply to postings directly, which causes techs
- who participate just as much if not more hassle. In addition, unless
- the newsgroup was peered by a mailing list, tech support people on

- This is a good synopsis, although much of the interest I've received

- That can be handled by a moderator, but the two serious problems are
- the lack of a mailing list for the gatewayed commercial services and
- the public nature of the email addresses of the techs, who don't need
- personal email asking questions.
-

- This is possible, I suspect, but again, if anyone can read, and they
- see that so-and-so from Claris is posting, hey, why not just write
- that nice person about the problem we've been having with FileMaker?
- Then nice so-and-so gets irritated and stops participating in the
