- Subject: [*] Microcosm-demo.hqx
-
- In Microcosm, you pilot a microscopic robot around a maze while trying to
- destroy the nasty viruses that are trying to destroy you. In order to kill a
- specific type of virus, you must shoot at it with a specially encoded strand
- of DNA. You can either rely on trial and error to find the correct DNA
- sequence, or you can pick up the computer chips that appear in the maze. These
- chips add functions to your robot and may make it easier to kill the viruses.
- Meanwhile, the viruses' DNA sequences can change due to mutation, and enemy
- robots roam the maze, performing such helpful tasks as knocking down the walls
- or trying to steal your computer chips.
- The Microcosm demo runs in monochrome or color and requires at least system
- 6.0.7. There is online help contained within the demo. Note that since this is
- a demo, some functions have been disabled. For the nominal fee of $15, you can
- get the full version which includes network functions, more levels and a way
- cool level editor. See the demo for more details.

-
- A few weeks ago, someone asked for a guide to Macintosh books. I found one
- in MacWorld January 1992. Eleven books are covered including all the classic
- ones. Even if the article is eight months old, it's good anyway since some
- of these books have been replaced by a new edition or will be soon.
- For someone on a tight budget it's a good review since *lemon* or out of date
- books are mentionned. Recently, there was a new edition of DrMacintosh by
- Bob Levitus. In the first edition, he warmly recommended Jasmine. I hope he
- will do better this time.
- Coming this fall is The Macintosh Bible highly recommended in the MacWorld

-
- Read "Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Comer. When you FTP, your packets
- bounce from one IP gateway to the next. Sometimes, the "distance" between you
- and your destination is a only a couple of T3 hops. Other times, your packets
- might end up going though several dozen hops which may include 56K links or
- even an X.25 satellite (sp) hop. Also some days, FTPing to the same site may
- involve radically different routing because a shorter path may be down or
- just too busy. Of course the destination machine could also be overloaded.

-
- Network traffic certainly has an impact, but the greatest source of
- difference probably is the fact that not all links are the same speed.
- Naturally, the maximum transfer rate is limited by the slowest link that
- happens to exist between you and the host you are transferring from.
- The slowest link may not be the same one (or the same speed) for
- subsequent connections to a particular host. Part of the Internet's
- reliability occurs because individual hosts generally have more than one
- connection; hence, there is more than one path that might connect two
- hosts depending what hosts and communications links are operating at the
- time a connection is attempted and what the existing loads are on those
- links.

-
- People,
-
- I have been subscribing to this list for a while now and It seems there's a
- lot
- of knowledgeable (sp?) out there. I live in Scotland, a most wonderful place
- except that the Apple dealers here work on that famous electrical goods import
- principle of "change the dollar sign into a pound one, and then add some more
- on". This means that the cheapest LCII I can get here is 1004 pounds! WHOA!
- Hey, isn't the exchange rate about 2:1 right now? That's $2000! Crazy huh?
-
- Anyhow, I have read that it's relatively simple (from who's perspective I
- don't
- know) to import a Mac for a whole hell-of-a-lot less. What I want to know
- is:
- Is there a mail order company that is willing to put a Mac on a plane across
- to
- Glasgow for me? It would have to be switched-mode supply (50Hz, 240V) I
- guess,
- and I hear that 60Hz monitors don't work too well over here, so I'd be willing
- to buy the monitor here - but I don't know too much about it. Alternatively,
- is there anyone on this side of the pond who has done something similar?
-
- Please don't hog the board - reply direct to me and I'll post a summary if
- anything useful crops up.

- Subject: internet news readers
-
- I think this topic is an important one for those reading news
- groups on the internet. I subscribe to a commercial internet
- service (netcom.com) which does an excellent job of providing news
- to their subscribers. They offer as news-readers "rn", "trn",
- "nn", and "vnews". However, they all pale in comparison to
- something like Steve Falkenburg's "NewsWatcher" which is now being
- upgraded under the coordination of John Norstad at Northwestern U.
-
- The difference is the windowed graphics interface that "NewsWatcher"
- provides. I can skim the titles of dozens of news articles using
- "NewsWatcher", in the time it takes to cover just one with "rn".
- Since "NewsWatcher" uses the AppleTalk serial link, I started
- looking into how to use it with a modem.
-
- Finally, I got a message from "gustilo@POBOX.UPENN.EDU" suggesting
- the use of "MacSLIP" from Hyde Park Software. I immediately called
- my service, netcom, to ask if they supported SLIP (Serial Line Internet
- Protocol). They said they did, so I ordered MacSLIP from Hyde Park.
- Being a TCP dummy it took me a week, with the help of Rick Watson,
- MacSLIP's author, to get the MacTCP addresses and the MacSLIP settings
- right.
-
- After establishing the SLIP connection I proceeded to attempt to
- configure "NewsWatcher". No luck! A call to "netcom" revealed
- that they do not support connection with an "NNTP" server from their
- SLIP server, which of course, is required for "NewsWatcher".
-
- Now for a couple of questions:
-
- 1. Does anyone know of a workable solution for people who hook up
- to the internet using the internet?
-
- 2. Are there other news readers which you can install on your Mac,
- or in your account on the remote host and on your Mac?
-
- If I can come up with a workable solution I'll post it here for all
- info-mac readers.

- I am quite sure that the LC has the problem. Look at the new
- speaker/fan "assembly" of the LCII vs that of the LC "Classic".
- At any rate, I'd suggest to not fight it. Go to a Radio Shack
- or Tandy store, buy the cheapest stereo amp that can be found (about
- $25.00 U.S.A.), and purchase a desktop speaker (also $25.00 U.S.A.).
- Take your Mac LC's manual with the port pin-outs to the Tandy dealer,
- and have the salesperson get you a suitable cable to hook all this
- together.
- The sound from the Mac is marvelous, provided you get the audio
- away from the tiny internal speaker. And the small amp and small speaker
- will not take up that much space on the desk. Note that since the
- speaker is cheap, it will not be shielded and will have to be kept

- On the contrary. The software publishers should never assume "standard"
- screen sizes. This is a strong point made by Apple in the original

- for the programmer to get the screen size from the operating system, I

- Subject: Quadra 700 Overdrive now shipping!
-
- I just recieved a message from Newer Technologies announcing that the Quadra
- 700 version of their Quadra/Overdrive clock speed accelerator started shipping
- a few days ago. They expect to take about 2 weeks to clear out back orders
- for
- it before filling out new orders.
-
- For those that don't know what it is, this is a small card/fan combo that
- plugs
- into the unused ROM slot on the motherboard. It includes software for varying
- the clock speed of the cpu up to around 33 MHz. Actual maximum speed will
- vary
- depending on the exact tolerances of each system, but NT expects the vast
- majority to be able to reach 33 MHz just fine. This works with 80ns RAM and
- 100 ns Video Ram (What you should already have installed) so you won't have to
- upgrade your memory. The list price should be the same as for the Q900
- version
- which is $349, however, look for 'street' (mail order) prices as low as $239
- or
- less.
-
- Also, I am not 100% sure of this, so check it out with Newer Technology or
- DayStar before you try it, but the Overdrive should work with the faster
- (Q950)
- version of Daystar Digital's FastCache PDS card for Quadras. The cheaper
- version for Q700/900 machines does not have static ram chips that are rated
- fast enough for the higher clock speed access. It might work, but probably
- won't give you any benefit. The faster board works with both the Q700/900 as
- well as the Q950 though so it is the one to get if you foresee boosting your
- clock speed. This paragraph is based on rumour & educated guesses so please ,
- check it out for certain with Daystar or Newer. If someone has more concrete
- info on this, please post it to the digest.
-
- Disclaimer: I have no relation to either DayStar or Newer except as a
- potential customer.

-
- In a continuation of my efforts to have everything go wrong on
- my Mac within a month of each other, I have come up with another
- problem.
-
- The sound in the right channel has stopped working. I have
- speakers plugged into the SE/30 and sound only is coming from the
- left (yes, it did work before and nothing was changed). Programs
- like Sound Trekker, when on stereo, only make sound from the left
- speaker. When I unplug the speakers, the sound naturally comes
- out of the Mac speaker, but at around half the normal volume (ie,
- the startup beep is fairly quiet).
-
- Also, plugging headphones in also yields sound only from the left.
-
- I've read several threads on bad sound on the SI. Has anyone
- experienced something like this on an SE/30? I've opened it up
- and all obvious wires are still connects (including the speaker).

- Insignia's implementation is in keeping with the Apple Human Interface

- Neither is WordPerfect. You can paste in equations as PICTs from
- Expressionist or MathType, but WP has no way to adjust the baseline of the
