- About 6 weeks ago I saw a post regarding 486/33 upgrade boards for the
- model 70. I called the company (Sigma Data) and there is indeed a board
- with a 486/33 for the 16 and 20 MHz model 70. It costs $995 (I think).
- At that time there was no A21 board but one was in development and should
- be ready some time fourth quarter. It will be a bit more expensive (still
- less than IBM's power platform for more horses) but based on the literature
- I have it should provide a SUBSTANTIAL performance gain. I do not know if
- the DX2's could be placed on these boards but it would be really nifty
- if you could. Also, IBM Australia, I was told, is using these boards
- internally with no compatibility problems.
-
- Also, I spoke with Cyrix two weeks ago, they will have their 386/486
- combination chip (I forget it's name, 486DLC?) some time fourth quarter.
- I was told it's completely pin-compatible with the 386, just plug-and-play.
- And, should list for < $300! This is an end-user upgrade package so when
- it comes out it may be well worth the price of admission!
-
- The 486 upgrade sold by Sigma Data is built by a company called Hypertech.
- Sigma Data's number is: 1-800-446-4525. Sigma Data was real nice when I
- spoke with them. They sent me some information right away and even called
- back to see if I got the literature and what my plans were.
-
- The price of these boards is roughly equivalent to some other 486
- motherboards, but then you have to worry about compatibility (I run OS/2 2.0
- so I need quality HW). In addition, you'd still have to purchase memory,
- hard disk, controller, etc for a new motherboard while my A21 is a
- complete working sturdy machine which could just use a speed-up. I'm
- glad to see these kind of upgrade products appearing.
-
- Just my ramblings,
