- The major factor I'd consider a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 over a
- Soundblaster PRO is that it is a _much_ quieter card - no bus noise,
- line hum, etc. The 16 bit stuff is the nice extra more-less, especially when
- the cost now is close to a SBPRO. The software included with the PAS16 is
- excellent, except for the DOS recorder - which is a pain. Developers will
- no doubt be supporting the PAS16 through a conversion driver so you can use
- 8-bit samples through the 16 bit stereo channels... a simple process. In
- the meantime you have the SB-compatible card already there - and can
- play 16 bit stereo at the same time.
-
- As to the volume control - its neat to have a mixer that controls
- all sound on your PC - even the PC speaker sound is routed through the PAS
- output with volume control. Course you have to boot Windows 3.1 to use it, but
- most of the software included is for windows anyhow. The mod player uses
- the 16-bit stereo out, converting from 8-bit - the sound is a bit cleaner too.
- But still the sample noise is from the original sampler.
-
- The PAS16 is _the card_ I'd buy today, but I bought a SBPRO a few
- months before it was released so I'm happy at the moment. The UltraSound will
- be the best overall card to buy _when it becomes available_. Creative Labs
- best be entering the 16-bit sound market soon or else make all thier cards
- considerably cheaper...
