- The price for the basic Cakewalk is the same as it's always been - $150 list.
- Cakewalk Pro is $250; it adds things like 43/50 line VGA support, SMPTE
- synchronization capabilities (for those who want to score film or video),
- the Cakewalk Application Language for writing MIDI manipulation macros and
- the like, higher resolution timebase selections (up to 480 ppq, while the
- basic CW is 120 ppq), and other stuff that I can't remember. The latest
- incarnation is CW for Windows which I have but am not using at the current
- time; the use interface is WAY different than the DOS-based versions which
- I'm very productive with. A video scoring friend of mine loves the
- Windows version though, and he's a much heavier user of CW. I believe this
- version is $349 list.
-
- Street prices for the basic CW are about $100; I've seen CW Pro for $189.
-
- I've been using CW since version 1.1; it's now at 4.0 (DOS version) and
- they have made significant improvements with every release. I highly
- recommend it. However, if you're one of those folks who must have
- notational entry/printing, CW is probably not for you. (The Windows
- version has a rudimentary note viewer but it has quite a ways to go yet,
- like most notational s/w.) Also, if you like putting together very
- structured music (ie. bar/bar/chorus/repeat as necessary), Texture is
- another package that is set up more like a pattern-based drum machine.
- Cakewalk is more of a Linear type of paradigm... ($0.50 please.)
