- Subject: Adaptec 1542B with ST506/MFM-Controller Problem?
- Keywords: Adaptec, 1542B, MFM, ST506
-
- As I want to expand my system with a SCSI-Drive, I am currently looking for
- a suitable SCSI controller. The Adaptec seems to be the right one, but
- serveral dealers told me that it wouldn't work together with my (old)
- ST506/MFM-Harddisc controller.
- A test with my friend's Adaptec adapter failed. When configured properly (?)
- (but with no HD connected to), my *ST506* drive begins to make noise (the
- head of the drive seems to move between the cylinders continuously) and the
- access time increases dramaticaly.
- My questions are: Is it a configuration problem, a compatibility problem or
- just caused by the fact that no SCSI drive was connected to the controller?
- Which other well supported SCSI controllers exist that don't have such
- problems (what about Future Domain?) ?
-
- Please excuse if this topic was discussed earlier as I usually don't read this
- group. Thanks for your response
