- <stuff about problem with jittery MS-mouse...>
-
- I saw people with this problem again and again, then it happened to me.
- When moved vertically, the mouse would sometimes stop and then "jump" to try
- to catch up. (Actually, I mean the cursor, not the mouse :)
-
- I took it apart and cleaned it, which worked for a little while, but eventually
- the sucker started jumping again. At this point a good smack on the table
- seemed to work pretty well (the mouse, not the cursor :).
-
- Eventually I took the whole thing apart and checked it out. As you found, when
- I rolled my finger on the roller, I worked fine. However, when used on the
- table, I surmised that the ball put a reasonable amount of force on that
- roller. Lo and Behold! When I pushed ohard on the roller, it would pop into
- a state where it would roll without moving the cursor. Releasing the pressure
- brought it back into its natural state. I concluded that the pressure exerted
- by the ball was very close to the critical pressure which pushed the mouse
- into the next energy state, allowing it to jitter back and forth between states
-
- My solution? I couldn't fix it and get it to stay fixed. I looked around a
- little for a new varistor to put in, but no luck.
- I forked out $55 for a Logitech Mouseman, which I like very much all in all.
- The old mouse? Ironically, my cat has a great time chasing the little rubber-
- coated ball around.
