- First of all, Brian, thanks for this review. It is very thorough and
- well-written. There are just a couple of points I would like
- to make.

- I don't think all acceleration is lost in the 15bit and 24bit modes. The
- hardware cusor is not supported at more than 256 colors, but I think
- bitblit and fills and the other hardware functions are still working
- (this is from scrolling around a 24bit image). Remember, in the 15
- and 24bit modes, it has 2-3 times as many bytes to move around as it
- does in the 8bit mode.
-
- Also, the 16color modes are much faster than the 256 color modes. Most
- things are twice as fast, but text and scrolling is 3 times as fast
- (I get 32,000 chars/sec on scroll system font at 1024x768x16 on my 386/33,
- vs. 12,500 chars/sec at that res with 256 colors).

-
- Vpic 4.8 works just fine on the 24X in vesa modes. I coulnd't get
- vpic 5.0 to work in this mode either, so I use 4.8. Also, PICLAB
- 1.91 hangs with the 24X, but 1.82 works fine. I wonder, what's going
- on here? I have hacked my own begware gif viewer, sgif, to support
- all the 256 color modes on the 24X. It is in the GIF directory on
- simtel. The file is SGIF17.ZIP.
