- Forgive the wide cross posting of this article: I cannot realize the
- nature of this problem.
-
- I recently upgraded my 386/16 Pc with an EISA 486/50 (Asus mother
- board) and all goes as was before (well, a little faster :-) but the
- parallel printing is slow. Very slow. Fortunately the motherboard is
- switchable to a lower speed (16 MHz) and doing so the printer starts
- running fast. But this is not the solution: at low speed like at high
- speed the printer (?) loses characters.
-
- I made extensive testings removing all the boards but the disk
- controller (and parallel board and vga, of course); I tryed
- several parallel ports; I changed cable and printer; I made all the tests
- with the distribution kernel, no patches, no added drivers; I tried
- the suggested patches for the known "slow parallel printing" problem.
-
- The current configuration is:
- Hardware:
- Asus mother board EISA 486/50, w/ ext. cache
- Eisa Intelligent (no name) IDE disk controller w/ cache
- Eisa S3 based VGA adapter (irq disabled)
- Isa QIC-02 tape controller (irq 9)
- Isa COM[12] (irq 3,4)
- Old Isa parallel adapter (irq 7) (made up of TTL 74xxx chips!)
- OKI microline 390
- Software:
- SCO Xenix 2.3.3
- Bell Tech tape device driver
- FAS 2.10 (it recently substituted 2.09)
-
- The only thing that made some difference was an integrated
- IDE+coms+game+parallel (with all but the parallel disabled), but it
- was not mine so I gave up. However I don't remenber exactly the
- benefits of that board.
-
- Thanks in advance for any hint or solution.
