  14. This has made the rounds before, but I never saw a workable answer.

  16. I have a need to know the diskette drive type (i.e., 360kB, 1.2MB
  17. 720kB, 1.44MB, 2.88MB, or none) for the A: and B: floppy drives in
  18. various computers without requiring a diskette in the drive or causing
  19. any drive access.

  21. To make things easy, I only need to do this on 286 or better systems.

  23. I know that various packages like Norton Utilities can read the CMOS
  24. and get the drive type.  Can anyone provide the addresses and values
  25. I need to check to do this?

  27. The problem to be solved is several hundred differently configured PCs
  28. on various university LANs.  The network menu system offers options
  29. for various disk management chores (e.g., format, diskcopy, etc).  The
  30. menu system is dynamic, and will only display options valid for the
  31. system configuration.  Currently, I set two environment variables
  32. (DRIVEA and DRIVEB) in the autoexec.bat to one of 00, 3D, 3H, 3Q, 5D
  33. and 5H, depending on what drives are on this system.  However, this
  34. means that machines that are not set-up properly cannot correctly
  35. use the menus, and I (or someone) has to go around and edit hundreds
  36. of autoexec.bat's to get things set-up properly.
