- This has made the rounds before, but I never saw a workable answer.
-
- I have a need to know the diskette drive type (i.e., 360kB, 1.2MB
- 720kB, 1.44MB, 2.88MB, or none) for the A: and B: floppy drives in
- various computers without requiring a diskette in the drive or causing
- any drive access.
-
- To make things easy, I only need to do this on 286 or better systems.
-
- I know that various packages like Norton Utilities can read the CMOS
- and get the drive type. Can anyone provide the addresses and values
- I need to check to do this?
-
- The problem to be solved is several hundred differently configured PCs
- on various university LANs. The network menu system offers options
- for various disk management chores (e.g., format, diskcopy, etc). The
- menu system is dynamic, and will only display options valid for the
- system configuration. Currently, I set two environment variables
- (DRIVEA and DRIVEB) in the autoexec.bat to one of 00, 3D, 3H, 3Q, 5D
- and 5H, depending on what drives are on this system. However, this
- means that machines that are not set-up properly cannot correctly
- use the menus, and I (or someone) has to go around and edit hundreds
- of autoexec.bat's to get things set-up properly.
-
- PLEASE MAIL RESPONSES TO ME DIRECTLY. I will summarize and post in
- two weeks.
-
- Thanks in advance.
