- Hi,
-
- Please accept my responses solely as an HP pc user. I don't know
- much about them technically and this is certainly not an offical HP
- response.
-
- I have a now-old HP pc that I purchased as am employee. I bought
- from HP because of the quality and ruggedness, but that's another
- story. Also, note that my PC is later than yours, but I had the
- same kind of slow and small disk problems as applications got much
- bigger. My controller is an ST-506 and I have a 40mb drive ST251-1
- which is better and faster than your 20mb drive.
-
- Anyway, I did not throw away what I had. Instead, I purchased a
- 105mb Hardcard II XL. It cost about $450 and filled up one slot.
- I still have my original disk, so I totaled 145mb.
-
- I use the slow original disk to boot from and do everything else
- from the Hardcard. One plus is that with two disk drives, I store
- critical data on both drives. I saves me from having to back
- up the system as often.
-
- If you choose to follow this advice, you'll have to make sure the
- Hardcard will work with your system. I can't help you there, but
- the Hardcard looks like it plugs easily into any 16 bit bus.
-
- Good Luck!

-
- P.S. The Hardcard does require that you install a driver for it. I think
- it takes about 17k, but that's just an old recollection. DOS 5.0
- might work for you and might let you load this driver and most of
- DOS high. Again, good luck!
