- Got a tough one here...my Blue Dolphin "we've gone bankrupt"
- 486/33 has developed a bizarre problem. I'll try to keep it
- short, but this one is really strange!
-
- Last month, I changed the battery that preserves the CMOS.
- After I got the CMOS reset, I tried to do a backup to my
- Colorado tape drive. After much thrashing of the tape drive,
- the screen blanked and gave me a "System Halted Memory Parity
- Error 0000:1xxx" where xxx is some hex number. This behavior
- was unfortunately quite repeatable. Dozens of tests later,
- I've determined that when EMM386 IS installed, the system "self
- boots" as the CHECKIT ram test tests the lowest 64K; if EMM386
- is NOT installed, the ram passes exhaustive memory tests. If
- EMM386 is installed and the FIRST memory test run after boot
- starts at 16K or above, subsequent memory tests (of the whole
- RAM - 8MB total) work fine! No matter what, the tape drive
- fails to work, and always gives the "system halted" error or
- just locks up the machine with jibberish on the screen. I've
- tried a different IDE controller with identical results.
- Removing all other memory resident programs makes no
- difference. Rearranging the SIMMs makes no difference - the
- CHECKIT program still chokes on the lowest 64K if EMM386 is
- active and this is the first test run after booting.
-
- Vital stats: AMI BIOS, ETEQ chipset, Maxtor 210MB hard drive,
- 8MB ram (1MB SIMMs), 486/33. The tape drive is at the end of a
- three drop cable with the two floppy drives.
-
- Help! If I can't figure this out, I may just give up and buy a
- new motherboard...
-
- Thanks in advance!
