  11. Got a tough one here...my Blue Dolphin "we've gone bankrupt"
  12. 486/33 has developed a bizarre problem.  I'll try to keep it
  13. short, but this one is really strange!

  15. Last month, I changed the battery that preserves the CMOS.
  16. After I got the CMOS reset, I tried to do a backup to my
  17. Colorado tape drive.  After much thrashing of the tape drive,
  18. the screen blanked and gave me a "System Halted Memory Parity
  19. Error 0000:1xxx" where xxx is some hex number.  This behavior
  20. was unfortunately quite repeatable.  Dozens of tests later,
  21. I've determined that when EMM386 IS installed, the system "self
  22. boots" as the CHECKIT ram test tests the lowest 64K; if EMM386
  23. is NOT installed, the ram passes exhaustive memory tests.  If
  24. EMM386 is installed and the FIRST memory test run after boot
  25. starts at 16K or above, subsequent memory tests (of the whole
  26. RAM - 8MB total) work fine!  No matter what, the tape drive
  27. fails to work, and always gives the "system halted" error or
  28. just locks up the machine with jibberish on the screen.  I've
  29. tried a different IDE controller with identical results.
  30. Removing all other memory resident programs makes no
  31. difference.  Rearranging the SIMMs makes no difference - the
  32. CHECKIT program still chokes on the lowest 64K if EMM386 is
  33. active and this is the first test run after booting.

  35. Vital stats: AMI BIOS, ETEQ chipset, Maxtor 210MB hard drive,
  36. 8MB ram (1MB SIMMs), 486/33.  The tape drive is at the end of a
  37. three drop cable with the two floppy drives.

  39. Help!  If I can't figure this out, I may just give up and buy a
  40. new motherboard...
