- i'm contemplating getting a high-speed (v.32bis) modem and using it
- under os/2. this virtually necessitates using the 16550afn uart for
- its buffering capabilities.
-
- i can get an internal modem with the 16550 built in. however, i would
- prefer to get the external modem which would require me to buy a
- serial card with the 16550 on it.
-
- jdr microdevices, according to computer shopper, wants something like
- $90 for a super-duper 2 com, 1 lpt, game port and etc card with the
- 16550 uart. i have no need for any of this save a single buffered com
- port, and i consider this price to be outrageous (especially
- considering i can SAVE $15 by getting the internal modem AND get the
- 16550 to boot).
-
- does anyone know of a CHEAP, serial-only, 16550-based card? one can
- by a nonbuffered (is it the 8650 uart that's the low end?) 2 com port
- card for about $10 through most of these places. i wouldn't think the
- 16550-based com-only card should be more that $30.
-
- failing that, has anyone ever replaced the uart in their gateway
- 486-33? (i think they use a 16450.) i was told once that it was
- soldered and not socketed. is the 16550 in fact a drop-in
- replacement? i'd take the top off and check myself if the thing were
- socketed, but i'd like to minimize the number of times i lift my 50
- lb. 5fg off the top of the case :)
