  13. i'm contemplating getting a high-speed (v.32bis) modem and using it 
  14. under os/2.  this virtually necessitates using the 16550afn uart for 
  15. its buffering capabilities.

  17. i can get an internal modem with the 16550 built in.  however, i would 
  18. prefer to get the external modem which would require me to buy a 
  19. serial card with the 16550 on it.

  21. jdr microdevices, according to computer shopper, wants something like 
  22. $90 for a super-duper 2 com, 1 lpt, game port and etc card with the 
  23. 16550 uart.  i have no need for any of this save a single buffered com 
  24. port, and i consider this price to be outrageous (especially 
  25. considering i can SAVE $15 by getting the internal modem AND get the 
  26. 16550 to boot).

  28. does anyone know of a CHEAP, serial-only, 16550-based card?  one can 
  29. by a nonbuffered (is it the 8650 uart that's the low end?) 2 com port 
  30. card for about $10 through most of these places.  i wouldn't think the 
  31. 16550-based com-only card should be more that $30.
  32.  
  33. failing that, has anyone ever replaced the uart in their gateway 
  34. 486-33?  (i think they use a 16450.)  i was told once that it was 
  35. soldered and not socketed.  is the 16550 in fact a drop-in 
  36. replacement?  i'd take the top off and check myself if the thing were 
  37. socketed, but i'd like to minimize the number of times i lift my 50 
  38. lb. 5fg off the top of the case :)
