-
- I was looking at a local bus 486-50Mhz motherboard in a computer store
- a few days ago. They have 2 local bus graphics boards for it, one is an
- ET4000 based board and the other is an S3 based board. The salesman
- said that the ET4000 is faster for "text" and the S3 is faster for
- "graphics", but I take it that they mean that the S3 is faster when
- taking advantage of the S3's graphics processor (like in windows) and
- the ET4000 is faster for SVGA and below.
- BTW, the manual on the S3 board claims that S3 is the same as XGA.. is
- this true?
- In choosing between the two boards, S3 or ET4000, I would prefer to
- get the S3 but only if it is totally compatible with VGA and only if it
- conforms to some standard like XGA which we can expect future games to
- support (and in the case of Origin games, perhaps REQUIRE..who knows?)
- and only if it is fast enough at VGA.
- As to why the S3 is slower, I can only speculate that the ET4000 was
- optimized for VGA/SVGA modes while the S3 was designed primarily for
- windows acceleration with SVGA/VGA compatibility tacked on as an
- afterthought.
- I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach to this S3 thing. I don't
- want to be a guinea-pig. I wonder if Wolf3d works on it...
-
- >2) How much slower are they?
-
- If both are on a local bus, I would expect only a small difference
- for VGA modes.
-
- >3) I thought a Diamond Stealth card would be faster because it uses VRAM?
- >4) Is ET4000 a card or a Chip Set?
-
- ET4000 is an SVGA chip set by Tseng Labs.
- Maybe someone with an S3 board could post some information on
- it.. specifically how do games work on it? Any incompatibility
- problems?
- Another reason to wait-and-see is that the S3 folks are
- bringing out a new version of the S3 in a few months. I don't
- know what the new features are though.
-
- cheers,
