  29. I was looking at a local bus 486-50Mhz motherboard in a computer store
  30. a few days ago.  They have 2 local bus graphics boards for it, one is an
  31. ET4000 based board and the other is an S3 based board.  The salesman
  32. said that the ET4000 is faster for "text" and the S3 is faster for
  33. "graphics", but I take it that they mean that the S3 is faster when
  34. taking advantage of the S3's graphics processor (like in windows) and
  35. the ET4000 is faster for SVGA and below.
  36. BTW, the manual on the S3 board claims that S3 is the same as XGA.. is
  37. this true?
  38.   In choosing between the two boards, S3 or ET4000, I would prefer to
  39. get the S3 but only if it is totally compatible with VGA and only if it
  40. conforms to some standard like XGA which we can expect future games to
  41. support (and in the case of Origin games, perhaps REQUIRE..who knows?)
  42. and only if it is fast enough at VGA.
  43.   As to why the S3 is slower, I can only speculate that the ET4000 was
  44. optimized for VGA/SVGA modes while the S3 was designed primarily for
  45. windows acceleration with SVGA/VGA compatibility tacked on as an
  46. afterthought.
  47.   I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach to this S3 thing.  I don't
  48. want to be a guinea-pig.  I wonder if Wolf3d works on it...

  59. Maybe someone with an S3 board could post some information on
  60. it.. specifically how do games work on it?  Any incompatibility
  61. problems?
  62. Another reason to wait-and-see is that the S3 folks are
  63. bringing out a new version of the S3 in a few months.  I don't
  64. know what the new features are though.
