- A couple of things :
- I have run across a couple of discussions
- in other usenet forums also relating to the Newton.
- In both instances, Mathematica, Maple, or a custom
- math program was nominated as software for the Newton.
- Replies have been from 'no', to an open endorsement
- for developing on the Newton from a represenative at
- Apple itself. Apple is now working on 'offshoot' character
- recognition (among which math symbols, and musical notes).
- For Apple to take off with it's Newton, the Newton
- itself will have to adapt and become handy for the everyday
- guy (even the everyday mathematician and musical artist).
- Faxing equations dosen't cut it. People will want the Newton
- to DO SOMTHING with what's inside it. (semi)Simply, part of the
- Newton's success will be the application software written
- for it. In another newsgroup, a retort about computing power
- came up (I will go into this in a second), in that the
- Newton won't have enough processing power, memory, etc. to
- drive high-power math software... but we here at comp.sys.hp48
- know better.
- As for the 3 times a 68030, remember what the interface
- of the Newton will require. A multitasking environment that can
- easily juggle a document back and forth between applications, and
- the pen interface ON TOP of what a normal computer's operating
- system would require. Mind you that the Newton has a custom
- designed RISK chip in it's head (and a not too shabby), but that
- proccesor was done up to streamline the real heavy stuff like
- handwriting recognition, etc. Yes, I believe Apple has a wonder-
- chip driving it's Newton (it will have to), and the raw processing
- power will be 3x68030, but effectively, it won't blow your socks
- off, since the Newton will be handling umpteen million things in
- the background (including your sloppy handwriting).
- It will be extremely interesting to see how Apple plays
- their Newton off. Given enough information about it's innards,
- the Newton could go into competition with the Hp48 in the 'neat
- electronic gizmo' category (Don't play that off lightly, or even
- the 'neat gizmo' part). Keep your heads up...
- Gee, I guess this is more than a couple o things. Guess I
- lied.

- PS : Those about to flame me can stick it... Well, you get the idea.
