- After using the HP71 with its unbeatable HPIL for a couple of years, it
- is very difficult to accept that transferring 10K of data may take 1 minute.
-
- The reason because there are no serious industrial applications around, is
- that the serial interface is yes very common, but it is also the slowest
- interface ever designed (sorry for the designer).
-
- Compared to the HPIL is like a turtle running versus Carl Lewis.
- Unfortunatley for the turtle, Achille's paradox does not work really.
-
- Unfortunately for us the HPIL was not well accepted by the market, because
- it's well known that the market is crazy (see the instructive history of
- the IBM PC), hence it happens that, after ten years of progress, we are still
- playing with serial interfaces (because they are cheaper).
-
- We run the risk to bring the serial interface well beyond its natural lifetime,
- which expired several years ago, just because it costs one instead of ten.
- (No matter if it is twenty times slower...)
-
- Paraphrasing Oscar Wilde, we may say that the electronics is the archive
- of forgotten inventions.
