- ?? Regarding Mach as an OS kernel: seems to me NeXT is running (seemingly
- ?? effectively)a Mach kernel (or derivative)?
- The NeXT is indeed using a Mach (2.0, I think) derived kernel.
- I don't find it so great, and indeed prefer HP-UX 8.0 to it (obviously
- I use both). In HP-UX, at least, I know where things are hidden.
- I detest NeXT's dynamical and irrecuperable swap files (Mathematica can
- easily fill up your disk and bring the system to a halt), which force
- me to reboot every few days.
- I prefer lp with its model scripts to lpr and its (obscure) printcaps
- (I realize this is not Mach but BSD). About the only plus of
- NeXTStep/NeXTOS is the dynamic loading into the kernel.
- So the moral seems to be --- don't rush into an unproven OS ---
- even if HP won't "serve a wine before its time."
