- The main problems I found coming to HP were ...
- o switching from bsd to sysV. All sorts of scripts/procedures which
- have served us well over many types of systems required rewrites.
- o the manuals are somewhat dense and the general tone is "you should
- use SAM". Unfortunately SAM doesn't tell you what its doing and
- hence it is very difficult to undo things when it goes wrong ! -
- Now I invest the time in working out how to do things longhand -
- it pays !
- o certain things which are taken for granted in SUN/SGI/ULTRIX
- environments are different or missing. Disk partitions are an
- obvious one here.
- o difficulty in using Exabyte drives
- o HP-UX facilities vary between HP platforms - even between 700/800
- series, which led to some frustration.
- However, I'm not knocking HP (so don't flame me :) ). All I'm saying
- is that coming from SUN/CONVEX/ULTRIX environments, it's quite a
- change. A recent move to SGI was simple, but I still have HP problems.
- Their manuals look comprehensive (and probably are) but if you are UNIX
- literate and basically know what you want to do, they can be very
- difficult to find just what you're looking for.
- Cheers,
- Mark
