- I am trying to upgrade my "Classic" H-P Vectra and having a very
- hard time finding out the necessary info. The GOAL is to increase
- the size of my harddisk storage to around 100 MB at minimum cost.
-
- My questions are re ROMs, setup program, DOS versions and
- harddisks.
-
- I just ordered ROM upgrades to v A.01.06 to replace my A.01.05.
- Does anyone know if I should use a specific version of the setup
- program with this new ROM? I currently have v 3.2 of the setup
- program. Do I just stick the new ROMs into the same spot on the
- processor extension cards as the old ones? What sort of drives
- are supported, and can I specify my own info? (H-P won't tell me
- any of this unless I pay them at least $45!)
-
- My harddisk is a 80ms (!) 20MB ST225 and I have a WD-1003-WAH.
- What sort of drives have worked for you in this machine? I would
- prefer to keep the same controller (minimize cost) but am open to
- suggestions. If I'd added a second MFM drive, could I continue to
- use my original ST225 even though its size would be different?
-
- (Aside: I have a Adaptec 2372C RLL controller and a 108MB CDC
- drive in my main system. Any chance that I could use that combo
- in the vintage Vectra? I wouldn't mix the RLL drive with the
- old MFM ST225)
-
- I am using H-P DOS 3.1, will this work with the new ROMs? Is
- anyone using the generic DOS v5.0 upgrade with this machine? (I
- am concerned about partitioning the drive and the 32MB limit
- imposed by version 3.1 of DOS) I would like to avoid programs
- like SpeedStor etc because this machine is so quirky.
-
- Many thanks for any info you can provide. Please e-mail me
- directly if possible since I have a hard time keeping up with
- this group.

- PS: This machine is not very compatible, and everybody,
- including even H-P acknowledges this. H-P, however willing
- to sell me this machine and (for $80 extra) the technical
- docs (which do not contain answers to my questions) will NOT
- answer my questions about their system without charging me a
- minimum of $45!! This is the poorest support and attitude
- I've encountered. If the machine was as compatible as
- advertised I wouldn't have to go to H-P for specifics. To
- make me pay extra to find out about a product they sold me
- feels a little like blackmail to me.
