- The Motorola 56001 DSP is a general purpose Digital Signal Processor.
- Probably the easiest way to think of a DSP is as an ultrafast math
- coprocessor. The NeXT uses the same DSP and uses it to do things such
- as emulating high-speed modems (a 9600-14400+bps Fax/modem is in the
- works for the Falcon for around $100), handling high quality digital
- audio, and various other tasks. The NeXT is a popular research
- workstation due to the abilities of the DSP in calculating large amounts
- of data. There's also talk of using the Falcon's DSP for decoding and
- outputting Dolby Surround Sound. The DSP could also be used to make
- flight simulators which rival even the best arcade games (ever see STEEL
- TALONS?).
