- Just FYI, Intel's DX2 chips are known as "clock doublers" in that they internally
- double the effective clock speed of the DX chip. Hence, a 486-DX33 can operate
- at 66MHz with the addition of the DX2 chip. What's nice about this arrangement
- is that the system components don't necessarily have to be rated for a 66MHz cpu
- which keeps costs _much_ less than what a "true" 66DX layout would cost. The
- downside is that vendors must be careful about architecture due to heat problems
- and only your real CPU intensive tasks benefit greatly from the DX2. Still, the
- overall throughput is such that a DX2 should provide about 85% the speed of a
- DX for just a few hundred bucks more. Quite a savings so it is no wonder that
- the PC community is excited about this technology... a 66MHz machine for less
- than the cost of last year's 33MHz barn stormer ain't bad (even if it IS a PC). :)
-
- Unfortunately (?), Motorola chips were not built with the flawed design that
- allows Intel to come up with a clock doubler chip in the first place. :)
