- Dell, AST, Gateway, ALR, and others are making billions a year selling
- inexpensive PC clones. They've already go 66 Mhz 486 machines out the
- door at the same price ($2495) as 33 Mhz machines cost a few months ago.
- They're working on very small margins (nothing new to Atari) but they make
- up for that by selling tens of thousands of machines a month. Gateway alone
- grossed $600M last year and sold a few hundred thousand machines. With a
- market of 10 million PCs in the U.S. each year, you'd think Atari would
- have a half decent chance of getting even a small market share, but from
- what I've heard they don't even bother to produce the Atari ABC machines
- anymore. Way to go. What are they waiting for? Cheaper DRAMs? <grin>
-
- Wang, well, that's not exactly a name synonomous with PC clones! Clones are
- not their main business. From what I've read their problems are that they
- were deep in debt, didn't adapt quickly enough to create new products, and
- they hired someone to lead the company who didn't really know what he was
- doing. And when was the last time you saw a Wang advertisement? Atari sounds
- like another Wang just waiting to happen!
