- A firm in Warren, Michigan, USA called Innovative Concepts produced a
- scheme using a 400/800 connected to a XL/XE via the cartridge port. The
- RAM in the 400/800 could be used for either a printer buffer or a RAM disk.
- Once upon a time (isn't that how all fairy tales begin), ICD was to release
- a special ROM for the MIO to permit true networking. (I suspect that the
- chip would allow the MIO to have different SCSI addresses)
-
- On the other hand, it is easily possible to setup a simple device to allow
- two 8bit systems to share all the SIO peripherals. All SIO lines are in
- parallel except for the +5VDC and COMMAND. +5VDC can only be connected to
- ONE computer (the master) and the COMMAND line is hooked to both via a
- single throw, double pole toggle switch. The master computer must be on at
- all times - the slave computer can be on or off as desired. The switch is
- toggled to allow one or the other computer access to the SIO bus - but only
- one computer is allowed access at the same time. I built a small box with
- a couple SIO jacks and an SIO plug and the switch for about $25 - the most
- expensive parts were the SIO connectors. It worked great - I would let the
- kids load a game from the floppy drive on their 800 while I continued to
- work on my 320XE - when I needed the floppy (I typically only used my hard
- drive) or the printer, I flipped the switch and used them.
