Well, one idea that pops into my mind, speaking for myself, is that
with a direct Internet connection (telnet, for example) you now have
some little hacker sitting at a university somewhere who can repeatedly
attempt to get onto your account and run up your bill...  not a good
situation.  With a dial-up connection that costs $.25 each call (such
as with hermes.merit.edu) Mr. Hacker will soon go broke since he has
to pre-pay it.
