  33. Are you telling me that GEnie's computers run under UNIX? If they do
  34. not, then what possible effect could any insecurities in a UNIX system
  35. affect GEnie? Don't make the common mistake of assuming that the
  36. Internet has anything at all to do with UNIX - the purists will bite
  37. your head off! ;-)

  39. I logged on GEnie and checked out the INTERNET beta-test section the other
  40. night. It costs $9.95 EXTRA per month (effectively tripling the $4.95
  41. monthly subscription fee) PLUS you get to pay $0.40 *per message*. I took
  42. advantage of their feedback menu option and told them what I thought of
  43. their pricing strategy. ;-)

  45. I pointed out to them that Public Access UNIX systems everywhere offer
  46. unlimited Internet mail for a couple of dollars per month. Many FIDOnet
  47. BBSi offer internet mail for FREE. Even *Compu$teal* charges less for sending/
  48. receiving Internet mail than GEnie does. Now, if CI$ charges less for a
  49. service than you do, you KNOW you are overpriced. You'd think that GEnie
  50. would have taken a hint from the massive outcry when Fraudigy started
  51. charging per email message and avoided per-message charges like the
  52. plague, but alas such was not the case.

  54. I've been pulling for GEnie for a long time, ever since they started up
  55. their Star*Services for a flat rate monthly fee. They have the potential
  56. to be the BEST online service in terms of bang/buck. Based on what I've
  57. seen of this Internet gateway setup, however, GEnie's going to blow this
  58. BIGTIME if they don't wise up. :-(
