- About a week ago, my Apple //c decided to stop working for me. The
- first sign of trouble was that when it was in 80 column mode, 3 grave
- accents (`) appear at 3 locations on the screen (but were not present on
- the 40 column screen). Whenever I tried to start a program, it would
- crash, freeze up, or just plain act weird.
-
- I had a 1 Meg Z-RAM Ultra II memory board (from Applied Engineering)
- installed while this was happening, as well as an 8 MHz Zip Chip. I
- figured the Zip Chip had failed (since I had a similar problem with a
- RocketChip last year), so I replaced it with my good ol' 65C02 chip.
- That didn't fix the problem.
-
- Then I removed the 1 Meg board and put the MMU and CPU chips back in the
- main board. That didn't fix the problem either.
-
- Then I tried doing a self-test (oa-ca-ctrl-reset) without the Zip and
- without the Z-Ram Ultra II installed. This is what I got instead of the
- pleasant "System ok" message:
-
- *RAM 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
-
- Would anyone please explain to me what happened to my computer. I think
- (from this informative message) that one of my RAM chips on the main
- board stopped functioning, but how serious is the damage, can it be
- fixed (easily), and how much could it cost me?
-
- Also, when I put the Z-RAM Ultra II back in my //c (without the Zip
- Chip) and I did another self-test, the "System ok" message appeared, as
- if nothing was wrong. But when I try to start an application, the grave
- accents still appear, and my programs don't work.
-
- Yours desparately,
-
