- To all of you who've been fretting over the NewTek Video Toaster Workstation
- and how it doesn't say Amiga on the front of the box (though it still does on
- the back, inside, and in the manual -- but that's another story) -- according
- to Jim Plant, the publisher of AVID, the Amiga-Video Journal in the June '92
- Avid Letter (the subscriber-only supplement to AVID) it will soon be a moot
- point. (Geez, long enough sentence there, or what!)
-
- He says NewTek is getting out of the Toaster Workstation biz, for a number of
- reasons -- the biggest probably to help relieve tensions between NewTek,
- Commodore, and the Amiga dealers. He reports what has already been said on
- the Amiga echo already, that Commodore told many of its dealers not to sign
- on as authorized Toaster Workstation dealers or else risk losing their
- official Commodore dealer status. He also says, as has been heard elsewhere,
- that some dealers signed up with NewTek anyway -- but the majority didn't
- want to cross Commodore on this. Jim says these dealers could still sell
- Toaster systems by installing Toaster cards in Amigas, but because they
- weren't official NewTek Workstation dealers they didn't get many NewTek
- amenities, including access to the lucrative NewTek referral network.
-
- Jim Plant says there are less than 100 Workstations in stock and when those
- are gone from NewTek's HQ that's the last of them.
-
- So that means the big discussion of what IBM and Mac users will or won't
- think about the Toaster (whether they know it runs on an Amiga or not) is
- soon to be old news.
