- I just got a Quantum 105S and the installation has not been going well. I've
- seen a number of posts here recently about Quantum drives, so maybe someone can
- help me (I hope). The drive came with zero documentation. I tried calling
- both the dealer and Quantum, with no results. I have a 2000 (rev. 4.6), 2090A
- controller, 1 meg. Agnus, OS 1.3, and 1.2 ROM. I set the drive address to unit
- 0 (all 3 jumpers off). I left the EP jumper (enable parity) on. The resistor
- packs on the drive are in place. There are no other SCSI devices on the
- controller. I ran prep, but it didn't know about the 105 under its SCSI menu,
- so I started over using "user specified drive".
-
- The dealer said to use 755 cyl., 16 hds., 17 sectors/track. Someone at work
- said to use 1020 cyl., 4 hds., 49 sec. The file format.dat on my Sun says to
- use 974 cyl., 6 hds., 35 sec. I made up a mountlist entry for res2: and tried
- all three combinations. The only one that worked was the last one (from the
- Sun). With the other two, the drive just sat there (no LED activity) and prep
- timed out. Next I rebooted, made a mountlist entry for my main partition. The
- drive formatted and initialized OK (took about 50 minutes). Info reports
- 202,000 blocks free. But when I try copying files to it, I keep getting
- read/write errors at apparently random locations. I copied 20 megs. and got
- about a dozen errors, so something is still not right.
-
- Prep asked me about a "write precompensation cylinder" (whatever that is) and
- suggested the highest one (no. 973), which I used. It also asked if I wanted
- to make any sectors bad. I said no. I can't imagine all these errors are due
- to bad spots on the disk.
-
- I used an interleave of 3, suggested by the dealer. The main partition was
- created as a FFS. The two MFM drives I have on the same controller run FFS
- with no problems.
-
- At this point, I'm really stuck. What are the *real* parameters for this
- drive? Could someone who has a Quantum 105S running please tell me what their
- mountlist looks like? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. When I
- called Quantum, I ended up in one of these automated "please press 1, press 2"
- systems that eventually told me I didn't need to know the drive parameters
- because the controller handled it automatically. Duh.
