-
- Well, if your users have pure HSTs (not HST dual standards) they won't
- be able to connect to the Supra at high speed. US Robotics's HST
- protocol and the CCITT V.32bis protocol (which the Supra implements)
- are two different ways of implementing a high-speed data link. They
- don't talk to each other.
-
- Now, if the users have HST dual standard modems, their modems can talk
- both HST and V.32bis. Since the Surpa talks V.32bis they'll be able to
- connect.
-
- Why do the HSTs sell for so much more than the Supras? Brand-name
- recognition for one thing. USR is a more established company. This is
- the same reason IBM sells more expensive PCs than the clone makers.
- They're betting the people will trust the name enough to pay extra.
- Also, since the HST Dual Standard modems implement two protocols
- instead of one, you're paying for more capability.
-
- If you have the choice, I'd say get a V.32bis modem. It's a public
- standard that anyone can implement. HST is a proprietary standard that
- only USR can implement. It's my personal opinion that HST modems are
- on their way out. If you have a large user base that has only HSTs,
- you might want an HST dual standard. That'll let you talk HST to your
- existing base and V.32bis to new users and people who upgrade to the
- cheap (Supra, Zoom, etc.) high speed modems.
-
- I've had my SupraFAXmodem for a few months now, and I'm happy with it.
- It usually connects okay at high speeds, but it has trouble retraining
- to lower speeds on the fly. If you've got good phone lines this may
- not be a problem for you. I hope they resolve this in the 2.0 ROMs
- (which have been due out Real Soon Now ever since I bought the modem.)
- There're also supposedly some problems with the FAX capabilities, but
- running a BBS that probably won't be a concern for you.
