  13. Acorn Strengthens Links with IT Centres

  15. Acorn Computers is launching an initiative aimed at
  16. strengthening its working partnerships with Educational IT
  17. Support Centres throughout the UK and thereby enhancing the
  18. support available to schools in their use of Information
  19. Technology. 
  20.  
  21. Acorn in Education Centres all around the country are
  22. providing a collaborative network to offer the best level of
  23. IT support to schools.  The Centres will act in close
  24. collaboration with Acorn's network of Education dealers,
  25. with Acorn, the Centres and Education dealers mutually
  26. assisting one another. The role of the Centres is to provide
  27. the educational aspects of IT support while dealers will
  28. continue to offer sales, installation and technical support
  29. to schools.

  31. As education and technology develop, Acorn will continue to
  32. need to channel information to schools. Schools on the other
  33. hand will continue to need support to help them to use their
  34. computers to good educational ends.

  36. The Acorn in Education Centres, which now exist within many
  37. of the best Educational IT Support Centres in the country,
  38. will assure schools of a significant base level of support
  39. while helping them to access the wide range of advanced
  40. services offered independently by the Centres. 
  41.  
  42. Each Centre can be visited by teachers, where they will find
  43. a representative sample of Acorn's computers - including
  44. desktop machines, portables, network solutions, multimedia
  45. equipment and peripherals.  A reference library of core
  46. curriculum software will also be available so that teachers
  47. will be able to inspect the various offerings and get advice
  48. on how best to implement their use in the classroom
  49. environment. The Centres will also offer access to local
  50. educational training centres equipped with Acorn's range of
  51. computers and help schools to fund appropriate curriculum
  52. materials.

  54. As Acorn launches new equipment, demonstration systems will
  55. be made available to the Acorn in Education Centres so that
  56. teachers can always be apprised of the latest offerings
  57. available with information as to how they are best used in
  58. the classroom.

  60. Strong links are developing between these Centres and other
  61. groups in the Acorn community such as software houses and
  62. publishers.  Centres will also be able to register to carry
  63. out Acorn training courses and will be able to join with
  64. Acorn in mounting training conferences for teachers, and in
  65. exhibiting their services to teachers at national events
  66. such as the BETT and Education shows.

  68. Acorn's Managing Director Sam Wauchope said that the Acorn
  69. in Education Centre initiative showed Acorn was fully
  70. committed to serving the needs of Education in the UK.  "I
  71. believe strongly that computer technology has an important
  72. role in enabling teaching and learning" he said.

  74. "However, we are aware that merely providing the computer
  75. hardware is not sufficient.  It is for this reason that we
  76. have defined, as part of our mission, that we will work in
  77. partnership with others whose expertise is vital in creating
  78. the complete environment for effective use of IT in schools.

  80. "The AEC initiative is intended to strengthen and formalise
  81. our links with Educational IT Support Centres and we intend
  82. that the basis of the initiative will be a permanent part of
  83. our business. "
