  11. Acorn launches new A4000

  13. Acorn Computers is launching a new mid-range computer which
  14. bridges the gap between the newly expanded A3000 and A5000
  15. ranges (see separate news releases).

  17. Driven by the new ARM250 chip, purpose designed for Acorn by
  18. Advanced Risc Machines Ltd, and running at 12MHz, the new
  19. A4000 delivers 6 MIPS performance - which is 1.4 times
  20. faster than a 33MHz 386DX.

  22. The A4000 has 2MB of RAM expandable to 4MB on the circuit
  23. board; VGA graphic support comes as standard, as do the wide
  24. range of Acorn screen modes. There is a 2MB floppy disc
  25. drive which, with RISC OS 3,  can automatically detect and
  26. use Acorn and PC discs. Another major feature of this three
  27. box solution is the newly restyled keyboard.

  29. The A4000, with its industry standard 80 MB IDE hard disc,
  30. is housed in a slimline case which complements the A5000's
  31. styling. It has internal support for both Econet and
  32. Ethernet without compromising the main expansion slot.

  34. Although the A4000 can be bought on its own, it is also
  35. available as part of a new "Home Office" system.  This pack
  36. is targeted at the sophisticated professional user who wants
  37. more than just a PC. It contains an A4000 system including a
  38. monitor, an advanced wordprocessor (EasiWriter II) and
  39. Desktop Database (together with a disc of templates).  For
  40. those new to the Acorn RISC OS desktop interface, there is
  41. an audio training tape; there are also blank discs included,
  42. together with a full product directory of applications
  43. written to run on Acorn's range of 32-bit RISC computers.

  45. The A4000 Home Office pack, which includes a CGA monitor,
  46. costs #999 ex VAT. Educational institutions can also buy the
  47. A4000 without a monitor for #899.
