  12. Some background: we're running Sun PC-NFS 3.5, on AST 386-33 computers
  13. and some original WD8003 Ethercard Plus ethernet cards (these are the
  14. old ones with a National DP8390).  We're using the stock PC-NFS driver
  15. for the card.  We run using the AUI port, with a SynOptics UTP
  16. transceiver, and also using the thinnet port with Black Box
  17. UTP/thinnet convertor.  We use NIS.

  19. Our problem is this - sometimes during boot the machine will hang on
  20. the NET NISSET * step.  At this point, the machine is really hung, and
  21. the only path is pressing the hardware reset switch.  The funny thing
  22. is, sometimes in this situation, if we disconnect the UTP cable, boot
  23. until it hangs on the NET NISSET * step, do a warmboot, replace the
  24. cable quickly, all comes up correctly.

  26. Other machines we run with newer WD (SMC) cards don't have this
  27. problem.  They're in different machines too (Compaqs and Intel
  28. protos).  I haven't really done any swapping of hardware to see if it
  29. is somehow an incompatability.  Has anyone seen this?  found a
  30. solution?  Is it fixed in PC-NFS4.0?
