- Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre, inaugurated in January 1990, is
- an interdisciplinary focus for high-performance parallel computing
- projects involving research groups within the University of Edinburgh,
- industrial partners and academic users throughout Europe. It
- incorporates research, service and applications development divisions,
- as well as participants from University departments, and affiliates
- from industry, and builds on a decade of practical experience in
- parallel computing. Its goal is to accelerate the effective
- exploitation of high-performance parallel computing systems throughout
- academia, industry and commerce. It supports applications work
- through research into the fundamentals of parallelism, development of
- support tools, parallel supercomputing services, consultancy, training
- and user support and industrial liaison.
-
- The Centre's principal computing resources include a 420-transputer
- Meiko Computing Surface, providing nationally networked multi-user
- access, an AMT Distributed Array Processor, and a recently installed
- 16,384 processor Connection Machine from Thinking Machines
- Corporation. It is also responsible for service on an i860-based
- 64-node Computing Surface targeted on "Grand Challenge" problems of
- science and engineering.
-
- The Centre is supported by industry, the University of Edinburgh,
- Lothian Regional Council, Scottish Enterprise, and by the Department
- of Trade and Industry, with major recurrent funding from the Science
- and Engineering Research Council and from the Information Systems
- Committee of the UFC. EPCC is one of four designated centres in the
- DTI/SERC-sponsored Parallel Applications Programme.
-
- The Centre's Annual Seminar provides an overview of its activities and
- resources, and presents a selection of research projects from the
- exapanding community of users. It also offers demonstrations of the
- local computing resources and of software. The Seminar continues the
- series begun by the Edinburgh Concurrent Supercomputer Project and is
- open to anyone with interests in the development and application of
- parallel computing.
-
- This year there will be two keynote speakers. Professor Geoffrey Fox
- is Director of the Northeast Parallel Architectures Center, University
- of Syracuse. He is renowned for his influential work in the
- development and exploitation of hypercube systems at Caltech.
- Professor Hans Zima is Professor of Computer Science at the University
- of Vienna, and Director of the Austrian Centre for Parallel
- Computation. From his background as a mathematician, he has emerged as
- a leading figure in parallel compiler techniques and systems, and has
- collaborated in and directed major projects in Europe and the United
- States.
