  28. The goal of the workshop is to bring together people who are interested in
  29. the issues of using heterogeneous clusters of computers as computational 
  30. resources. This group of people would include:
  31.  
  32.  - computational scientists or other end-users who desire to exploit 
  33.    the power and capabilities of heterogeneous clusters as an
  34.    alternative to conventional supercomputers or MPP's
  35.  
  36.  - software developers of queueing systems, parallel processing packages, and
  37.    other software tools 
  38.  
  39.  - system administrators interested in both the strategic and technical issues
  40.    of running clusters, including in general any kind of heterogeneous
  41.    collection of networked computers
  42.  
  43.  - vendors who are developing products to serve this market:
  44.    (a) new generations of high performance workstations
  45.    (b) new forms of packaging of workstations
  46.    (c) new high speed networking products
  47.    (d) new products for addressing mass storage and other I/O needs
  48.    (e) any other applicable technology
  49.  
  50.  - persons who would like to share their experiences, and especially give
  51.    critical advice on desired user requirements, shortcomings of present
  52.    hardware and software configurations, successes and failures to date,
  53.    overviews of planned projects, etc.
  54.  
  55. Although most practical implementations of clusters to date consist of 
  56. collections of RISC workstations, we are interested also in more general
  57. configurations which might include any number of distinct architectures, 
  58. and a variety of new high-speed network interconnections.
  59.  
  60. The format of the workshop will be to fill the day with contributed and
  61. invited talks, and to have informal evening gatherings designed to further
  62. enhance the opportunity for information exchange. We especially encourage
  63. contributions of a 'practical experience' nature, since this is likely to
  64. be of the most use to the many people who are involved in cluster computing,
  65. and will also be complimentary to the many conferences that stress more the
  66. academic side of computing and computer/computational science research.

  68. Please register for the workshop using the form attached below. We encourage
  69. as many attendees as possible to plan to make a presentation at the workshop.
  70. We do ask that speakers plan to address topics within the scope outlined
  71. above. Please send us a short abstract describing your talk, so we can plan an
  72. appropriate place in the schedule. An announcement of the schedule of
  73. speakers will be distributed as soon as possible. Within the limits of
  74. available time, we would like to accomodate as many speakers as practicable.

  76. The 'proceedings' of the workshop will be published via anonymous ftp. We will
  77. request each speaker to send us an approriate electronic version of his
  78. talk (ascii, postscript, tex, latex, troff, etc.). These will then be placed
  79. on the machine ftp.scri.fsu.edu for further distribution.

  136. The workshop hotel is the Holiday Inn, located within walking distance of
  137. the FSU Conference Center and SCRI on the FSU campus. The hotel does provide
  138. shuttle service to/from the Tallahassee airport. Rooms are $39 per night,

  140. mention the Workshop on RISC Cluster Computing to get the special rate.
