  13. Hello,
  14.     I have a Vax 11/730 fitted with a RL02 and a R80 disk drive. I
  15. have recently moved this system into my home and now it fails to boot. I
  16. thought at first this was a media problem due to the move but on closer
  17. inspection the hard disk fails its power on tests. All the front panel
  18. light stay on and the disk does not spin up.

  20.     After checking the connecting cables to no avail I decided to
  21. RTFM and settled down to read the R80 disk drive user guide
  22. (EK-00R80-UG-001) and, lo and behold, on page 2-9 I found the microcode
  23. diagnostic checkout procedure. So armed only with a screwdriver I opened
  24. up the powered up disk drive and set about the tests. All seems okay
  25. until I got to step 4 which says,
  26.  
  27.     a. Set the thumbwheel switches to "22."
  28.     b. push the ENTER switch and release. The LEDs will momentarily 
  29. display "22" (0010 0010 binary).

  31.     Okay so far !

  33.     c. If no errors are encountered, the LEDs will then display
  34. "AA" (1010 1010 binary). If any display other than "AA" is obserevd,
  35. refer to the R80 disk drive service manual for corrective action.

  37.     Not a sign of "AA" instead I get "53" (0101 0011 binary).

  39. So I looked through the small stack of manuals I received with the
  40. system and didn't find the service manual (suprise,suprise). There is
  41. also no mention of the meaning of these codes in the user manual.

  43. So does anybody out there know what the code "53" means ?
  44. Is the fault fixable ?

  46. Better still does anybody have a list of all the possible error codes ?
