- Hello,
- I have a Vax 11/730 fitted with a RL02 and a R80 disk drive. I
- have recently moved this system into my home and now it fails to boot. I
- thought at first this was a media problem due to the move but on closer
- inspection the hard disk fails its power on tests. All the front panel
- light stay on and the disk does not spin up.
-
- After checking the connecting cables to no avail I decided to
- RTFM and settled down to read the R80 disk drive user guide
- (EK-00R80-UG-001) and, lo and behold, on page 2-9 I found the microcode
- diagnostic checkout procedure. So armed only with a screwdriver I opened
- up the powered up disk drive and set about the tests. All seems okay
- until I got to step 4 which says,
-
- a. Set the thumbwheel switches to "22."
- b. push the ENTER switch and release. The LEDs will momentarily
- display "22" (0010 0010 binary).
-
- Okay so far !
-
- c. If no errors are encountered, the LEDs will then display
- "AA" (1010 1010 binary). If any display other than "AA" is obserevd,
- refer to the R80 disk drive service manual for corrective action.
-
- Not a sign of "AA" instead I get "53" (0101 0011 binary).
-
- So I looked through the small stack of manuals I received with the
- system and didn't find the service manual (suprise, suprise). There is
- also no mention of the meaning of these codes in the user manual.
-
- So does anybody out there know what the code "53" means ?
- Is the fault fixable ?
-
- Better still does anybody have a list of all the possible error codes ?
-
- Many, many thanks in advance.
