- Subject: CDrom players for DOS and VMS?
-
-
- This is probably a FAQ, but...
-
- We are trying to decide what strategy to choose in terms of making CD
- ROM4s available to our users over the network. Since this will be small
- scale usage (at least for now) I would like to avoid investing in an
- Infoserver at this point. We would like to be able to read VAX/VMS CDs
- as well as CDs aimed at the PC market in the same unit.
-
- Questions for you CD wizards:
-
- - As far as I can understand we are dealing with (at least) two different
- "standards" in terms of how the CD is read. Are they incompatible or can
- I use the same reader for any standard as long as the physical format is OK?
- - Someone told me that HP (?) is selling a CDrom player that is able to sense
- what kind of CD you plug in and adjust to the specific type of disc.
- Any info available on this?
- - If I buy one or two RRD42, connect them to one of our VAXen
- can I then mount a "DOS formatted" CD in this drive and connect to
- it and use it as a file service from PathWorks?
- - Or the other way around, if I install a standard PC-type CD player in
- a PC, can I then use it from the network (PW 4.1) as if it were a local
- hard disk or printer mounted for remote access? Would I even be able to read
- VAX/VMS CD ROMs from there?
-
- Any info appreciated.
