- We are in the process of upgrading a Gateway 2000 (386DX-33) to run
- OS/2. Right now we have a 100 MB ESDI hard drive running on an EISA
- bus. We have a large amount of data that we want to keep on disk, but
- the data is only used periodically, so transfer speed is not top
- priority.
-
- Checking on prices of ESDI and IDE drives, we've found that, even if
- we order a controller card, we can get roughly twice the disk space
- for the same cost if we buy IDE.
-
- My idea is to partition the existing ESDI hard drive: a 10 MB DOS
- partition (as drive C) to allow emergency booting of vanilla DOS, and
- the remaining 90 MB as a bootable HPFS partition containing the OS/2
- system, networking support, the swapfile, and other heavily used
- program and data files. Then, we could have two IDE 200 MB drives
- running off of one IDE controller--mostly HPFS with a DOS partition
- or two.
-
- Is there any problem with this setup other than possible performance
- problems with the IDE drives? Is anyone out there running IDE and
- ESDI technology side-by-side on an OS/2 EISA box or on any box? Do
- the cards co-exist peacefully and will OS/2 recognize them properly?
- I don't have the particulars on our ESDI drive or controller, but is
- there anything to watch out for here?
-
- I would really appreciate mail replies from anyone with experience in
- this area. I can't even remember what ESDI stands for! (Though
- knowing this would still not really help.) I will summarize to the
- net.
-
- Thanks in advance.
