-
- Since when is Hurcules a standard? Did Hurcules get together with
- selected industry people and agree on an interface? No. Did they
- develop the technology completely on their own? No. They
- hacked CGA.
-
- Just because a technology is popular and is cloned by many manu-
- facturers do not make it a standard. ET4000 is popular and made
- by many manufacturers. Does that make it a standard? No.
-
- Also, VGA is IBM's technology. They developed it. That's why they
- wrote the driver for it. Plus the fact that it is a standard. Everyone
- does VGA the same way.
-
- SVGA is a different story. IBM didn't develop it, and it is chaotic.
-
- >Again you are talking about propritary hardware ET4000.
-
- ET4000 is not very proprietary, since not only Tseng makes cards
- with it, but so does Diamond, Orchid, Trident, etc. If ET4000
- is proprietary, so is the i486.
-

-
- Now it's your assertion. Prove that Microsoft wrote a Herc driver.

- I dispute this. WHat qualifies Herc as a standard? An open system
- is *not* a standard.

-
- Perfectly within their rights to do so.
-
- >If you don't consider Hercules a standard, I give up.
-
- Herc is *ancient* technology compared to VGA. Do you expect that we
- have a CGA driver, too?
-
- >And I agree there is no standard SVGA hardware. So companies write their own

- >If you still don't get the point, here it is again.
- >Like many other software companies, IBM should have written drivers for ALL
- >"STANDARD" (VGA,EGA,CGA, and Herc) video cards. But they only chose their
- >"standard". Enough said!
-
- And one more thing. You don't realize what an undertaking a device
- driver is. It requires **intimate** knowledge of the hardware.
- IBM doesn't stand to make money writing Herc drivers. Herc clone
- vendors do, because if OS/2 sells, they will be losing markets.
- You can't criticize IBM for this type of thinking, because everyone
- does it. (Yes, even Microsoft!!)
