  16. After stumbling through several "challenging" difficulties over the past months,
  17. I finally found one I can't seem to get around.  (I'll omit the full horror 
  18. story, though it's better/worse than most of them...)
  19.  
  20. The problem:
  21.   OS/2 with HPFS installed fails to properly deal with floppies (3.5 inch)
  22.   written by other systems (including the same machine before HPFS install).
  23.     A directory listing shows only the first character in each filename
  24.     and does not allow access to any of the files (File not Found error,
  25.     even when double clicking the icon in the workspace).  Also, files
  26.     written by this system appear incorrectly on other systems (eg. only
  27.     first character of file name shows up, directory table seems screwed up)
  28.  
  29. The compound problem:
  30.   After trying everything and making sure that all the documentation says that 
  31.   HPFS still uses FAT for floppies, I decide to try to boot with the FAT file
  32.   system instead of HPFS (note: C partition is HPFS, D is FAT).  Naively
  33.   I remark out the IFS=HPFS line in my config.sys file.  On Reboot OS2   
  34.   complains that there is no IFS line in my config file and stops the system.
  35.     (Apparently it wants "IFS=" followed by nothing for FAT, why????)
  36.     Attempting to boot from the OS2 installation disks seems to be going
  37.     well until an error appears, the file A:\COUNTRY.SYS FILE NOT FOUND 
  38.     (or something close).  I know that the file is there, and have 
  39.     not had this problem before in booting from installation disks.
  40.     Also, I notice that the CONFIG.SYS file of disk #1 of the installation
  41.     disks has a IFS=HPFS... line in it.  
  42.  
  43. The status:
  44.   I'm totally stuck.  I can't even get my computer to boot and even if I could
  45.   get it to boot from a DOS disk, I doubt that I would be able to read/modify
  46.   the CONFIG.SYS on the C: drive (HPFS partition).

  48. Please, if you have any suggestions please let me know, before my machine and
  49. OS2 go out the windows...
  50.  
  51. Machine specs:
  52. 386 25 MHZ clone
  53. 12 Mbyte RAM
  54. 65 Mbyte RLL hard drive (2 30Mbyte partitions)
  55. 1.44 3.5in TEAC floppy
  56. 16 bit video card (Paradise?)
