- Cartridges streamers do not allow tape data to be partially
- overwritten. There are exactly two valid places where write operations
- are allowed: at the beginning of the tape and behind all written data.

- It is likewise impossible to append to an archive, since TAR writes his
- own EOF record(s) [at least 512 bytes of zeroes] which cannot be
- overwritten later. Some streamers allow overwriting the trailing tape
- filemark, but this is intended for old versions of TAR which don't use
- an EOF record.
