- I don't think this posting answers, in *any way* the original poster's
- very valid concern. I can empathize with him because I was almost caught
- in the same trap. Why not try to answer the question factually and leave
- gratuitous comments aside? He doesn't mention he wants to restore Windows
- applications. How about FAT data files? or DOS programs? He didn't mention
- using Norton Desktop as a shell. For all we know, he might be using just
- the Norton Backup of the Norton Desktop for Windows. (I bought the Desktop
- last fall because it included the Backup and cost less than just the
- Norton Backup for Windows package -- at least here, in Toronto. The fact
- that the desktop is much better than the Program/File Manager was a very
- pleasant surprise).
-
- Anyways, on to the facts :-) I originally installed OS/2 in a dual boot
- configuration on a hard disk with just one partition. Eventually things
- got out of hand and I decided to reconfigure. Last week I took the plunge
- and repartitioned/reformatted/reinstalled with Boot Manager, 3 FAT partitions,
- and 1 HPFS partition. I installed OS/2 on the HPFS partition and
- DOS on a FAT partition. So, now, the disk looks like this:
- Boot Mgr, primary C: DOS, D:, E:, FAT, F: HPFS - OS/2
- I did take a backup of the non-OS/2 files with Norton Backup.
- Before the repartitioning, I tried to restore some files with NBackup
- running under Win-OS/2. It failed at the compatibility test, when it tried
- to backup and restore a sample of the files. However, since I was planning
- for a DOS+Windows partition, anyway, it didn't really matter.
- The thing to note is that for the NBackup to run, one needs only
- the *.dll and nbw*.* files from the NDW distribution.
- I don't remember the exact size of the minimal DOS+Windows+NBackup
- configuration but it is less than 10M (I can check tonight and post again)
- So, one could have such a partition just to facilitate the migration.
- Unfortunately, one would have to repartition/reformat and reinstall.
- That's not too bad, though, since it took me less than 2 hrs
- to partition/format/install OS/2, DOS, Windows. The key is to have decided
- exactly what you want to do and where to put things before you start.
