  17. characters or hundreds of lines, please do not use this practice.

  27.  A1: First of all this should not be taken as a recrimination
  28. against any individual poster of binaries to a discussion newsgroup,
  29. but rather as a reminder to all of us of the potential problems
  30. involved. Because this information is at the same time intended to
  31. help the well-meaning posters of binaries, there are pointers at the
  32. end of this item on how to make your binary available in the proper
  33. way.
  34.    If someone sees these things differently, ok, but please note
  35. that I would rather not get flaming, indignant arguments crashing in
  36. over this issue. (All civilized views are naturally always welcome).
  37.    Also please note that it does not make a decisive difference
  38. whether these posting in fact just contain sources and no
  39. executables. The problems are similar whatever (binary posting or
  40. something else) we decide call this method of distribution.
  41.    I know and understand that most of who do this mean well, and
  42. wish to contribute to the general usefulness of the news. We all
  43. appreciate that. Nevertheless, I would strongly advise against
  44. posting binaries to unmoderated discussion newsgroups.  On top of
  45. that the net rules don't like it, let's look at this from a purely
  46. practical point of view. If other netters follow suit and start
  47. posting binaries to discussion newsgroups not meant for this
  48. purpose, there are several potential problems:
  49.     1) The traffic will soon explode, since it is bound to be more
  50.        or less haphazard. This is bound to invoke action sooner or
  51.        later from the systems along the feed and/or net
  52.        administration.
  53.     2) There are no guarantees against trojans and other nasties.
  54.        (This does not mean that the other methods are absolutely
  55.        safe, but the likelihood is smaller by far.)
  56.     3) The probability of commercial material being posted over the
  57.        net increases, with all the consequent repercussions.
  58.     4) The idea is very wasteful of net resources. Remember that
  59.        there are over 80000 readers in eg comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d.
  60.        Much better to put/get stuff into/from the orderly moderated
  61.        groups, or use anonymous ftp, mail servers, or good BBSes.
  62.     5) Even should the binary posting be just a short minor one, it
  63.        may easily snowball by invoking others.
  64. Now what to do if you have a useful binary you want to distribute. A
  65. much better avenue than posting it is telling where the utility is
  66. available.  Or if it is not yet available anywhere on the net, first
  67. upload it to a suitable ftp site, or send it to the relevant
  68. moderator of the binary postings (provided there is a suitable
  69. binary group on the net). If you wish to have the instructions for
  70. submitting MsDos files to garbo.uwasa.fi archives I'll be happy to
  71. send you our upload instructions if you email me for them. Or if you
  72. wish to FTP the instructions directly, they are available as
  73. garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/UPLOAD.INF.
